Not for virgin eyes

I had an opportunity yesterday to witness child birth- first hand. I have three kids but never saw or had a baby come out the "poom poom." My sister-in-law had her baby yesterday and I was in the room from 5 centimeters until pushing. Let me tell you how this girl was such a champ. She was cracking jokes, smiling, and in just a good mood the entire time. NO. PAIN. Her back was a little uncomfortable from the epidural but that was it.

Finally she thought she felt the baby's head pushing out so she asked the nurse to check her. Sure enough, baby's head was right.there. literally. We were all shocked. It was my mother-in-law, Mama's BFF, Mama's grandmother, and me, all in the room shocked. The four of us were not ready for Mama to start pushing. Mama was ready. The nurse had her try a few pushes and then she decided it was time to call in the doctor.

Mama just laid there smiling.

When the doctor came in and the pushing resumed only Mama's grandmother had the courage to look. Finally, my MIL peaked over the legs (she too was a c-section mommy) and she literally almost passed out. But then she couldn't stop looking. Me and BFF were too scared to look and sat there on the couch griping hands. Not only is that just a lot of personal space, but some visuals leave a lasting impression- you know? I knew that once I had that visual the "poom poom" would never look the same to me again. I had delicate virgin eyes.

Finally I peaked over and my eyes almost bugged out. Yikes. That's the only word I can use to describe "it."

Five pushes later and baby was out! Mama was smiling and tearing up. It was amazing. I am so happy for my SIL.

The hospital smells and sounds made me think a lot about when my kids were born. Especially Daughter. I started shaking yesterday when the nurse said it was time to push. Daughter's birth was such a traumatic yet joyful time for me that I was overcome with that day. One day I'll post about it. But as if right on cue, my little princess just walked down the stairs with her big, beautiful smile- ready to start her day.

Here she is- with her brothers.

Congrats to SIL!

I,too, have never seen it live and in living color. I couldn't imagine what that looks like. I told hubby not to look for the same reason! But I do wish that I had pictures to memorialize the event because although I remember it vividly now, I would like to remember it forever!

Yay! Congrats to SIL. I never tire of new baby stories. How special that you were right in the room with her.

And in my next life? Two words: INDUCTION and EPIDURAL. Now I know. It doesn't even make sense why I had to go thru the drama that I did. Three times. I still can't post about it.

Did she have a boy or a girl? Congratulations to your SIL, and to you for popping your birth-watching cherry! ;-) I watched my sister give birth to my niece (this was BEFORE I was even married) and I tell you, there is nothing like watching that go down!

What a wonderful story. I also have 3 kids but only one came out my "poom poom"..LOL Sorry for the french but that shit HURT!!!! She ripped me from the front to the back so it wasn't a pleasant site.

I don't think I could have people other then my hubby there while I'm giving birth. Your SIL is brave!

Way to go to your SIL!

Your children are absolutely gorgeous! The chance to have a little girl makes me want to try for a third, but with my luck I'll have twin boys!

Congratulations to your SIL! And way to go to you for your bravery and support! After birthing 7 children, I've still never actually "seen" the process. But my husband assures me that it ain't a pretty sight! My last two births were done with a midwife, one at home and one at a birthing center. . .both unbelievable experiences!

It's so great that you were there when the new baby came into the world! I don't know if I'd be able to watch the "area", though . . .

They brought out a mirror when I had my first son, and I took a look -- but, dang, that looked too PAINFUL. So in the interest of actually getting the baby out, I had them put the mirror away.

Before I get into the birth I have to say that is such a beautiful picture of your children!

As for the birth I was also a C-section Mommy for both my boys and I agree I would have fainted away LOL I actually saw a C-section on TV and almost passed out when they cut that Mama up! Thankfully we forget about all the pain we experience or else the human race would be extinct!
