Dicta...

Thank goodness for The Goodnight Show. DD never used to give the tv a second look but now at bedtime, she asks for her milk and "pill-oh" [read: her satin pillow] and "feevee" [read: tv] and happily lays in our bed to watch her show before going to bed. I know, I know, tv is evil and all but really, is taking advantage this time to have 15 minutes of peace and quiet so reprehensible? I think not. (Although I did hear that the chick who was hosting that show earlier this year was fired because she starred in an adult film during the first part of her career - but that's neither here nor there...)

So my latest challenge is finding the perfect nursery school for DD. The new year is approachng and I've already witnessed first-hand the crazed drama involved with getting your child on the waiting list, preparing for interviews and the like. [Yes, I did say nursery school] And while I refuse to become Mom-Zilla, I do recognize the importance of nurturing my soon-to-be 3-year-old's mind at this crucial time in her life, and so I've made a few appointments at schools to get a feel for the nursery school landscape. Note: This all would have sounded hilarious to me 5 years ago. The thing I cannot understand, well actually, there are a couple - so the thingS that I cannot understand are the cost of these programs and the hours they are offered. $15,000 for a three-year-old? Are you kidding me? And who can enroll their child in a program that is offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30am to 1:30pm? Umm, I know I'm in a growing minority and all, but aren't there any moms out there that still work full-time? I just don't get it. In any case, I'm on the job (pun intended) and will let you know how the open houses go.

In other news, I already miss my mom and my sister who were here for Thanksgiving. It was just like old times - laughing until we cried, shopping, doing ridiculous versions of the Running Man, eating artichokes [with lots of garlic butter], homemade candy apples, sausage dogs with Dijon, and watching bad movies while all bundled up under one blanket on the couch.

Hey! I think there's one candy apple left! Niiiice. On that note...

J. Fergie....you must have been reading my mind. I am now looking for child care and I can't believe the cost. I am terrible (as we all know) but I never put Lady Day on any wait lists for child care and now that I am finally trying to get back into the workforce (quite reluctantly...I must add) I've got to figure out what I'm going to do.

I know we need to have a formal plan for child interaction and learning, but I just can't find an affordable and reliable source.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

There is no easy answer, unfortunately. Daycare in the northeast is like having a second mortgage! But you do what you have to. Your best bet is to talk to other moms (haven't been to Mocha Moms yet, have you?? Update: You might like the Northern DC Chapter better than the Southern) Try looking and posting on www.dcurbanmom.com Also, check out www.naeyc.org for accredited centers in your area. You should also try government agency daycare centers which may have more reasonable rates (but super-long waitlists). Also, inquire as to whether the company that you are applying to offers childcare options. Don't rule out homedaycares either (as long as you trust the owner) - this has worked perfectly for us. But you've got jump on it! Call places, get on waitlists, plan visits and save those pesos!

Thanks a lot. I'm looking into these sites immediately. I think I'm going to post a wanted ad for a nanny too and see what happens. I'll let you know how it goes.

Check DCUrbanMom for a nanny too. There are a zillion postings of nannies looking for a position. Thought: Do you think Lady Day would have a better time in a daycare setting with other children to play with? It's always been my gut feeling that once children reach the age of 1, they need interaction and staying home with a nanny might be lonely. But that's just me...I suppose a nanny could take her to storytimes, the playground and playgroups, etc.

Too bad SOMEONE didn't let us know her Supernanny Evelyn was available! I have been trying to find one and the women I speak to all but burst out laughing when I ask if they cook as well.

I am just now reading this and I have no idea where you learned that my super nanny is available?? In fact, Ny asked me for her number a few weeks ago, I finally located it, called her and she informed me that she is working a family who has twin girls, age two, and that she loves it. I then proceeded to call J. Ny, a fax machine answered, so I could not leave a message. I hoped she would see my number in her caller ID and call me back, but that was wishful thinking.

LOL. I, too, was a victim of J.Ny's fax. She FINALLY decided to look at her caller-id on Friday and called me back. It's ok though. She's gonna laugh real hard when I send her a fax message next time.

Clarification: SOMEONE didn't let us know Supernanny Evelyn was available years ago when SOMEONE moved to another state.

[Side note: If Evelyn only knew we were sweating her this much!]

Oh my Lord! We had this conversation at least 2xs. I suggested Evelin (that's actually how you spell her name) from day one and SOMEONE said they couldn't afford her full-time so therefore SOMEONE chose to pass her up!
And Evelin does know how much I sweat her. Everytime I talk to her I tell her she's the best, then ask her what I need to do to have her move to JAX!! When she laughs I tell her I'm serious.
